Design in Depth: Color Musings

February 23, 2011

Artist John Scofield‘s recent paintings have me musing about color. Specifically, what colors together prove the most interesting combinations not only on paper, but in rooms. I’ve taken the liberty of pairing four of his paintings with some rooms by designers I love.

The pink and black in “Karachi†would add a wonderful accent to this stairwell by interior designer Kelly Wearstler.

Pink and orange has never been an obvious choice for me, but Scofield’s “Communion in Quinacridone Violet†and this girl’s room by Jonathan Adler seem to be made for one another. Now it’s a favorite color combination.

Jamie Drake added oomph to this orange dining area with blue accents, but for the walls I think a series of Scofield’s paintings called “Striped Bass†would have felt even more modern.

A long-time favorite room in black and yellow by Wendy Valliere of Seldom Scene seems the perfect hanging place for Scofield’s “Murder of Crows.â€

Next time you find yourself at the end of another snow day, pick a favorite artist and try pairing them with rooms of your own and let us know about it.
