On the Market: A Pastoral Retreat in Pomfret, Connecticut

Pomfret, Connecticut is known as the Quiet Corner. Known for its old homesteads, back roads, and breathing room, the northeastern-most quadrant of Connecticut has a personality all its own. It has the charm of the Litchfield Hills, with far fewer weekenders. It’s serene, but hardly desolate; there are plenty of B&B’s, restaurants, and antiques shops worth the drive. (Fun fact: Pomfret is home to the Sharpe Hill Winery, producers of fine Connecticut wines, including the award-winning Ballet of Angels blend.)
If you think living in the country is heaven and have always dreamed of owning a really pretty piece of it, read on. The main house, weathered brick with a slate roof, was built in 1942 and renovated twice. It has space (at 5,353 square feet), tons of charm, and architectural details—including curves in the formal checkered-floor entry, staircase, and dining room.
There’s a private guest suite on the first floor and four more bedrooms on the second; all told there are four full baths and one half-bath. The kitchen features Plain & Fancy cabinetry, a stainless farmhouse sink, and Bosch appliances.
While the house is swoon-worthy on its own, the property surrounding it may just seal the deal for the next owners. The home sits on 52 mostly open acres dotted with iconic stonewalls and split rail fencing. The gardens are spectacular (the previous owners cultivated 400 rhododendrons and specimen trees, and planted a new formal rose garden).
There’s an immense three-level carriage house that can be used as a studio, yoga space, music hall … you name it. It’s currently housing a workshop, caterer’s kitchen, a gym, and a vast, barn-like entertaining space on the first floor. Oh, and there’s a top-floor retreat that overlooks the classic Quiet Corner landscape. The property is listed for $2,650,000 with Stephanie J. Gosselin of Berkshire Hathaway in Woodstock. The MLS number is G10172788. For more information, call (860) 928-1995, ext. 121 or visit the property website.
