Notes from The Field: Vintage Inspiration

I am thrilled that the current issue of Country Gardens by Better Homes and Gardens magazine features floral arrangements I created and styled. This was a dream project that evolved from my love for flower arranging and my passion for collecting vintage fabrics.

I have been collecting fabrics for over thirty years, and I often mimic the patterns within the fabric to create wonderful floral designs and styling. I also use the flowers in these patterns to influence my own flower and container choices.

Textiles can inspire me in a myriad of ways. When I see a fabric that I love, I purchase several yards, which will eventually find their way into a future projects.
Looking for a unique way to showcase fabrics? A fabulous print can make an impressive statement when framed on a wall. After all, fabric is art!

Some outstanding yardage will come in handy when you want to create a one-of-a-kind accent chair.

If you are looking for a source for vintage textiles, I would recommend Full Swing Textiles in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Suzanne Boucher, the shop’s owner, is a proponent of integrating modern design with vintage style—which is evident in their large collection of both vintage and new fabric pillows.

I’m crazy about some of these vintage textiles on the Full Swing Textiles website.
If you’re looking to create your own unique style in your home, look to the past, as well as the present, for inspiration. You never know, the colors found in a vintage floral fabric may translate into a beautiful modern interior.
