Notes from the Field: Pumpkins Go Beyond Halloween
November 4, 2013
Text by Karin Lidbeck Brent
Now that Halloween is over, you may find yourself with a few un-carved pumpkins. There’s no need to discard them. The fall season is far from over and November is the perfect time for using pumpkins for something more than just a pretty Jack-O-lantern.
Floral arranging is one of my greatest passions and I find using pumpkins as my go-to vessel creates center stage arrangements during fall.
Pumpkins are watertight so you can place the water directly inside. To avoid decay over longer display periods, add a jar or wet oasis into the pumpkin.
A large, flat shaped pumpkin like this Cinderella pumpkin makes a great container to house a glass hurricane. I used miniature tropicals sold for terrariums that are perfect for this project along with moss dug up in the yard.
