Notes from the Field: Mountain Retreat
January 2, 2012
By Karin Lidbeck Brent
This is the time of year when I start to dream of a winter escape to a beautiful mountain home. Packing up my car with skis, snow boots and winter gear summons visions of the many mountainside homes located in northern New England. These Vermont homes mirror the true definition of a winter wonderland.
What really inspires one to settle in the remote mountains of Vermont is the tranquil atmosphere each mountainside lodge acquires. This timber frame home, designed by architect Sam Scofield and built by Peregrine Builders, was photographed by my friend and associate, Vermont photographer Susan Teare. This great example of timber frame architecture sits in pristine white acreage, a natural part of the majestic landscape.

After a long day skiing, I would be thrilled to end my day here. This barn-like home enveloped by the white powders of winter was designed by the Cushman Design Group in Stowe. These photos, also taken by Susan Teare, beautifully illustrate Cushman Designs’ unique approach to home design. The house was designed as a collection of smaller living places, each space with abundant access to daylight and majestic winter views.

However, if the words small and cozy come to mind when dreaming of your own winter getaway, this modern sustainable cabin is a great example of Cushman Designs’ knack for an intimate and simple setting.

A roaring fire in a comfortable great room is an essential element for any post-ski afternoon. The fireplace, wooden beams and high ceiling enhance the comforting atmosphere of this mountain home (also by Cushman Design Group). Who wouldn’t want to spend a lazy afternoon by the fire here? I can easily see myself sinking into the big couch with a tasty mug of steaming hot chocolate.

Hot chocolate anyone?
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/3 cup boiling water
- 3 1/2 cups milk
- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup half-and-half cream
At the end of the day, these fake fur throws from Fabulous Furs would be the most luxurious treat. Not only are they completely irresistible when dreaming of that long winter nap, but they are also a complementary accessory (necessity?) to the style and architecture embodied in any of these Vermont residences.
Surrounded by rolling blankets of white and tucked behind the towering evergreens, this inviting cabin lights up the night, generating a serene snowcapped locale. This home depicts the true nature of privacy. After a long day immersed in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, who wouldn’t want to return to an isolated mountainside paradise.
