Heritage Craft Nantucket Lightship Basket Workshop

This three-day destination workshop offers a rare opportunity to create a traditional Nantucket lightship basket in the very environment where the craft originated. Led by master basket maker Kathleen Myers, who has over 30 years of experience, participants will be guided through the full weaving process, learn the history of the craft, and view examples from the Nantucket Historical Association’s collection.

Using traditional materials, including white oak, attendees will begin and complete their own basket over the course of the program. Originally developed by 19th-century lightship crews stationed offshore near the Nantucket Shoals, these baskets served as both functional objects and a way to pass time during long, isolated assignments.
