Worth a Visit: RH Greenwich

Last month Restoration Hardware opened their latest outpost in an architecturally significant space in Greenwich, Connecticut. Housed in the old post office on Greenwich Avenue, the building was meticulously restored down to the iconic yellow brick on the outside.

Restoration Hardware worked with preservationists to restore the three original pendant lights across the front of the building and worked with the town on landscape details that include a World War I obelisk at the front of the building.

A former loading dock was transformed into a second entrance and now displays outdoor furniture. There are large terraces that surround the second floor with more outdoor furniture arrangements.

Inside, the design team, led by James Gillam, created a second level without changing the height of the structure, giving the store 23,000 square feet of display space. The entire store is in various shades of putty and vanilla, from the perfectly lit and appointed bedroom scenes to the living and dining areas. Large chandeliers hang at various heights, giving a sense of coziness to the soaring spaces.

It’s funny. There was an older gentleman who approached the entrance as I was leaving a few weeks ago. He asked if there was a place to mail a letter inside. I smiled and said no, but that he should go in to take a look around. I’m quite sure it didn’t look like his old post office.
