Vitania Liscio: European Style by the Lake
May 24, 2011
Finally, warmer days have arrived north of the 44th. It’s time to start planning summer retreats and escapes. Some may prefer a sandy beach, surf and a saltwater ocean to keep cool from the warm, beating sun, but I can’t resist a freshwater lake, lush greenery and a rustic cottage.
Tracery Interiors helped a young, energetic family complete the retreat of their dreams on Lake Martin in Alabama. The cottage took four years to complete, and mixes beautiful architectural elements with rustic beams and stone walls. It feels very European, with a generous scattering of antiques that give old life and character to a new build.
The elegant, curvy chandelier (from Les Trois Marches) hanging over the dining table is one of many feminine touches that juxtapose the rustic details.

Fresh fabrics and linens add softness to the weathered beams, antique oak floors and cool stone. Another notable feature of this home is how environmentally conscious the family was in creating it, from sourcing local trades and craftspeople to using reclaimed wood beams, eco-friendly fabrics, jute rugs and natural textiles.
But let’s get down to the truth here: the rustic features are purely decorative. This place is extravagant and luxurious. The kitchen is spectacular, with its Wolf range, Sub-Zero fridge and Venetian marble countertops. What a divine place to spend cooking and preparing fresh summer foods! You can tell they do plenty of entertaining here. In fact, designer Paige Sumblin will often drive up to decorate for parties.
The master bedroom and bath is decadent with antique chandeliers, a Waterworks soaker tub and luxurious linens.
I love that the woman of the house managed to sneak in some subtle hints of pink for her own serenity.
Guests are also outfitted in ultimate luxury with iron canopy beds and crisp fabrics.
I am officially inspired. Now if I could only find a place that incorporates one-quarter of the features exhibited in this magnificent lake house, I would be heaven.
Thanks again, New England Home, for inviting me to be part of your fabulous blog!
