Set along Water Street in Wiscasset, Maine, the newest outpost of Plain Goods feels both inevitable and serendipitous. For cofounders Andrew Fry and Michael DePerno, Maine has long been part of their story.

“We’ve been coming to Maine over the last thirty years, and it’s always been a very special place for us,” says DePerno, who, along with Fry, recently restored a nearby farm. When the pair stumbled upon a historic building in town, the decision to lease the space came quickly. “It was instantaneous. It just felt good and reminded us of our first shop in Connecticut. It ticked all the boxes.”

The shop, open May through December, prioritizes experience over transaction, Fry shares. Inside the roughly 600-square-foot space, that philosophy plays out through a tightly edited mix of clothing, vintage and new homewares, and antique furnishings.

Though small in scale, the shop reflects the unique charm of its environs and local taste. “We
really considered what the customer might be looking for here. It’s a very outdoorsy, active, natural setting,” notes DePerno, “but there is also a level of sophistication.”

Maine has a rich tradition of craft, and the shop is deepening its ties to locals, reinforcing the store’s balance between global sourcing and regionally made products. Here, clothing from Japan and England is displayed alongside wooden bowls hand-turned in Wiscasset. Uniting it all is Fry and DePerno’s unwavering mission to seek excellence. “It’s about finding craftspeople who are aligned with our sensibility,” says Fry. “We look to see if the piece is simple, well-crafted, functional, and beautiful.” Plain Goods, Wiscasset, Maine, plain-goods.com
